This information from the Internet was useful and relevant to my topic  because it talks about how different cultures have influenced Manchester and this is one of the topics i wish to add to my documentary. Some of this research from the websites was very useful  for my documentary, such as when it states that in the 18th century people starting coming to Manchester.

"according to the latest figures the top 5 nationalities for non UK born people are in first place Pakistan with the largest immigrant population, second is Poland with many people coming over in 2004 when their country joined the EU, then comes the Indians the majority of whom came in the 50's and 60's, then joined by the republic of Ireland and completing the top five are those who moved over from Germany" - Vimeo

"How has Manchester changed in result to the immigrant population? in the days when the first immigrants came to the city a typical Manchester high street would manly consist of English grousers, post offices and local convenience stores in today's day and age it has became a plethora of global outlets and your more likely to see convenience stores from Poland and the middle east along side shops selling African clothes  or Jewish  souvenirs." -  vimeo

The new cultures have changed the appearance  our streets from what they used to look like with shops that may of been a English grosser to now perhaps selling different spices from India. they are not just bringing food or music with them they bring skills which can be made into a craft and knowledge and an insight into a different life that they can share.

Bullet points

  • Pakistan is the largest immigrant population in Manchester
  • The new cultures have changed the appearance of our streets
  • The immigrants are bringing skills and knowledge as well and culture and different food
Evaluation
The information i have found from the video clips are very useful and clear  when talking about how many people came to Britain and giving the exact number and year.It is relevant when talking about what our high streets look like in the day and age and comparing to what they did look like and informative when telling what skills the immigrants have brought to Manchester.

"Greater Manchester is home to a diverse population and is a multicultural agglomeration with significant ethnic minority population comprising 8.49% of the total population. there are over 66 refugee nationalities in the country." - Travel Manchester, England, UK: Illustrated Guide and Maps

"As of 2001 UK censers,74.2% of greater Manchester residents were Christian ,5.0% Muslim,0.9% Jewish,0.7% Hindu,0.2% Buddhist and 0.1% Sikh. 11.4% had no religion, 0.2% had an alternative religion and 7.4% did not state their religion. This is similar to the rest of the country although the proportions of Muslim and Jewish are nearly twice the national average." -  from Travel Manchester, England, UK: Illustrated Guide and Maps

"In may of 2001 violent rioting occurred in the town of Oldham, in the greater Manchester area of England. According to most reports these were the worst riots with apparently racial motivation in the UK for more than 15 years." - from Languages for Social Cohesion: Language Education in a Multilingual and multicultural Europe

Summary
Greater Manchester's  population is made up of 8.49% of the people with ethnic minority population. The most popular religion on people in 2001 was Christian with 74.2% of people being Christian, after that was Muslim with 5.0% perhaps these figures have changed in 12 years . There has been violence possibly due to racism in the past.

Bullet Points
  • The ethnic minority was 74.2%
  • 74.2% of the people who lived in Manchester in 2001 where Christian
  • There was a brake out of riots in 2001 due to racism
Evaluation
The books wasn't that helpful because they was very dated with all the information in them being from 2001 it wasn't really relevant. There  is some information i can still use by comparing the data from back in 2001 to what it is now, such as seeing that "74.2% of the people who lived in Manchester in 2001 where Christian" then looking at how many people who live in Manchester are christian in 2013 and looking at the difference.

Quotes

"the 7/7 bombings by home-grown Islamists were serious cause for concern. But this report shows that Muslims are no more willing to support violent protest, and are no more likely to reject integration into British society or a British identity, than any other group, including whites. It is in fact black groups, especially those of black Caribbean origin, who feel the most alienated and disaffected in British society; not Muslims." - The guardian

"As we British fans fill those Olympic seats and cheer Team GB, it matters not whether those athletes are first generation, second generation, mixed race, or white. We support every one of them with pride and patriotic emotion. And each athlete is equally as proud to carry the union flag and sing the national anthem as any of their team-mates." - The guardian

"In Manchester 200 languages are spoken" - Daily mail

"The project's Professor Yaron Matras, who is a professor of linguistics at Manchester University, said having such a multilingual population was of enormous benefit to the city's economy, opening the doorway to business links with hundreds of countries worldwide." - daily mail

Summary
Because of the 7/7 bombing this has concluded that Muslims are more likely to not be willing to integrate more than other ethnic group. in the Olympics it doesn't matter if the athletes are first generation, second generation, mixed race or white they still support our country and we support them. There are 200 languages spoken in Manchester this shows the variety of cultures in Manchester. Some people like professor Yaron Matras thinks  there are positives of having different cultures in Manchester like businesses opportunities with other countries across the world

Bullet points

  • Muslims are more likely not to be willing to integrate more than any other culture
  • multicultural people represent Britain in the Olympics and nothing in said
  •  200 languages spoken in Manchester
  • having different cultures is good for business opportunities
Evaluation
I found the research from the magazine articles very and relevant when talking about the 2012 Olympics and informative when explaining why multiculturalism is good for business.

Analyzing a similar documentary

This documentary hooks the audience by travelling to different parts of the UK to find out different opinions on multiculturalism, the audience will want to know if the documentary visits their hometown to see what people in there area think about multiculturalism. It makes the audience question their own view on multiculturalism and if they can relate to some of the people in the interviews. I think the target of this documentary is older people i think this  because it is mainly interviewing adults asking for there opinions so only adults will be able the relate and not so much teenagers.

Part 2: The treatment

Comparison

I want to make a documentary similar to this but there will be things different in mine, it will be recent and modern, i will not only talk to white people like this documentary does which i think puts a bias perspective on thing i will talk to many different cultures and asking both sides of the  story instead of just one. My documentary will not focus on multiculturalism around Britain and i will travel across the UK asking people about multiculturalism in their area, mine will be primarily focused of Manchester I also don't want my documentary to focus one one specific race or culture i want it to look at many different ones. I don't  want my documentary to seem boring or drag on and loose the audiences concentration i want to talk about subjects that they will be able to relate to. I will use my secondary research and talk about some of the positives of how the different cultures have effected Manchester in a positive way such as food and music and i will use my primary research to talk about some of the negatives with having interviews with young people to be able to see first hand there opinion on the subject matter and also using the results gathered from the questionnaires.

Synopsis
The documentary will be aimed at mainly people between the ages of 16-18. The reason i am aiming the documentary at this age bracket is because i think that young people living in Manchester may not know all the different cultures that live in the city, so hopefully this documentary will help give them an insight.

To start off my documentary there will be a wide shot of Manchester showing the wide variety of cultures and bright colours and it will cut to different parts of Manchester. A voice over will give some statistics about immigrants living in Manchester, such as when they first came over and who the biggest immigrants living in Manchester are, which is Pakistanis then cut to a shot of some Pakistanis getting on with their day to day life or walking past a mosque. Then it will cut to an interview asking teenagers about Pakistani’s and their opinions off them living  in Manchester, asking if they feel separated from their culture and if they have a problem with them living in Manchester and for them to expanded and give reasons as to why in detail. Then i would interview Pakistani teenagers and ask them if they feel a separation between them and Mancunians. If yes i will ask why they think this is and if they think there is anything both cultures could do to perhaps integrate more.

I will then cut to various cultures who live in Manchester getting on with their with their day to day life and have music from a different cultures playing keeping it very vibrant then i will interview various races of immigrants like African, Chinese, Spanish people that grew up for half of their life or more in a different country. I then will ask them what Manchester has given them that they could  never of got in their home country and if they have made friends with people from Manchester  and if they now feel excepted into our community and culture and if they found it hard to settle in the Manchester's culture.

We will interview Mancunians asking them what they think Manchester would be like if it wasn't as multicultural as is it and what benefits they think Manchester has gained by having a more multicultural city. I will then get good and bad responses, i will then edit them one after another to show the contrast in the responses.

Then i will show footage off different food stalls in Manchester such as Indian, African, and Chinese and ask people from the stalls questions for example 'is it only Indian people who come to your stall or is it many different races' to see if Manchester has embraced different cultures cuisine's. Then i will ask people what effects have people from different cultures had on the food we eat and if they take for granted the food we have available to us form all around the world.

By the end of the documentary i want the audience to understand all of the different cultures that live around us. I also want the audience to have gained some knowledge about the different people living in Manchester.

  1. Matt you have a clear vision for the subject matter of your documentary. You have included both primary and secondary research with your research diary and used a variety of sources (merit). You have also included brief analysis of each piece of research (merit). To achieve distinction for this section you should highlight the specific pieces of influential research more for example when you state

"The books wasn't that helpful because they was very dated with all the information in them being from 2001 it wasn't really relevant but some information i can still use"

What information can you use? You explain why you can't use some but you need more detail and analysis added.

Your treatment is descriptive with regards plot (pass). The language used is good but work is needed on punctuation and grammar to achieve merit. If you need additional support with this then let me know. You also need to add sections relating to your audience.
