Audience viewing figures,DVD sales, Box office sales these are all examples of quantitative data used in the film industry. Qualitative data is also used in the film industry Film reviews, audience reaction to a TV show these are all examples of quantitative data. Both types of data has its positives and negatives.
Advantages of quantitative data: Easy and clear to read.
The information can be conducted on a larger scale.
The facts can benefit you.
Disadvantages of quantitative data:Results are unpersonal doesn't take into account people mood or interest in the survey.
Results may not be relevant in a couple of moths.
The research will have to be done more often due to the number changing frequently.
Advantages of qualitative data: The answers will be more detailed and personal.
The detailed feed back can help more than just yes/no.
Feedback can help with future projects.
Disadvantages of qualitative data: Hard to get exact results.
Normally fewer people asked.
I think the best type of data out of qualitative and quantitative is qualitative especially for making a documentary because you want your answers to be in detail and relevant but also want it cost the least amountt of money as possible so i think qualitative data is best for this production.
Another type of research is Primary and secondary research. Primary research is done by yourself you are the one going out and gathering your own information and secondary research is done by somebody else but you take bits of information from that to help with your study. There are different types of primary research some are: interviews, focus groups and questionnaires. Some examples of secondary research are: Looking at books, retrieving archive footage, quotes, text books, documentaries, online blogs, Looking at magazines and newspapers and online articles. Both of these types of research have positives and negatives.
Advantages of Primary research: You know your data is reliable because you did it yourself.
You can interpret the results how you want.
The research will be accurate at that time for your study.
Disadvantages of Primary research: It can cost a lot of money gather all the information yourself.
It will also take a lot longer.
Advantages of secondary research: It is cheap and in most cases doesn't cost anything if you are retrieving your information from the internet or books.
The information already exists so doesn't take along.
You may get information that would be impossible for you to get yourself.
Disadvantages of secondary research: Some of the data may be bias
The answers may not be right for your research
Comparing both the advantages and disadvantages or primary and secondary research i think the best method to use would be both i think you should use mainly primary research and gather as much information as possible in the time given, but if there are some questions you are unable to answer yourself i think you should use secondary research.
Another method is audience research this can be split up into different groups there is audience profiling this is when advertisers make assumptions on the audiences preferences, geodemographics this is when people identify their self by nationality or geographically like British or Welsh. it is important to do audience research because people want to know who they are going to appeal to or if they do appeal to the audience they set out to.
Advantages of audience research: It can find out what a specific target audience like.
Can be used to get the best results for a particular audience.
Disadvantages of audience research: It may be hard to put someone in one specific category.
Advertising company's will send a lot of time and effort
defining audiences.
using scio-economic status is discriminating against peoples wealth.
Market research is gathering information about your audiences needs and preferences examples of this is competition this is researching whats already out there and why it was successful and why it wasn't successful and finding a medium between the two to make your documentary as good as it could be. Competitor analysis you need to look at what documentary are similar to yours and find the most successful and find out what it was the the audiences liked about it.Advertising placement this is finding out which is best to advertise your documentary this could be by trailers, billboards, endorsements.
I think competitor analysis is the best data for this because by taking inspiration from a already popular documentary but making it better by getting qualitative data and finding out the negatives can only make your documentary better.
Production research is research involving the product. like personnel this is cast and crew these are important aspects when making a documentary or any film you need to research if they have the right amount of experience to be on set, hiring someone who has worked on a project similar to yours will be an advantage and will allow production to run smoother with less things to worry about, research into what other film/documentaries they have done can help you get an insight to their style of work and ability. There is location this is also important because you need to do research on if you have permission to film in certain locations or who it is you have to speak to get the permission. The content is the content of the documentary such as what facts will be used in the documentary, who will you speak to and what locations you will film at. I think that primary research is best for looking at the overall content of the documentary a lot of the research should be carried out yourself but secondary research is sometimes necessary to make your documentary better by adding quotes or statistics from other people.I think the method that will get the best result is competition because if you know the good and bad points about another documentary will make you more aware of what you do and don't put in to yours, you would try and further to things that was good and exclude the bad things.I think the data that will allow you to develop your story is qualitative because you can get peoples opinions who are professionals on the topic and these people can advise to help develop your story.
Feedback can help with future projects.

Matt well done on completing this assignment. You clearly define and understand the meaning of different research data and methods (pass). In addition to this you use examples throughout to highlight your points for example when discussing the advantages and disadvantages of different research methods (merit). You also assess each method and purpose of research - this is good - before discriminating which is the best choice for each purpose (dist). This is consistent throughout the assignment until the very end when production research sections seems a little rushed.
ReplyDeleteYou are currently at a merit level with this work and only need to add more detail and assessment to the production section - discuss the content research of the documentary, how this is useful and what methods are best for it - to achieve distinction. Well done.
